From 12 to 23 October 2020, the first phase of an ammunition destruction operation was carried out by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD) of the Hellenic Naval Special Forces Command, in Monemvasia Bay, Laconia.
The destruction involved a large number of unexploded artillery shells, of World War II, found on the sea bed, near the port of Monemvasia. The destruction of the ordnance was executed in several steps including retrieval from the sea bottom, transportation to a safe pre-designated point and destruction by controlled explosions.
The whole operation will be carried out in multiple phases until the destruction of all the shells (over 800) is completed. The operation is executed in collaboration with the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Hellenic Police and the Municipality of Monemvasia.
