Georgios Sachtouris (1783-1841) was born in Hydra. From tender age he was involved in shipping, since 1819 he became shipowner and captain of Athena, the ship that played a significant role in the Hellenic revolution.
From April 1821 Sachtouris joined the flotilla of Hydra, and was involved in most of the naval operations, among which in the efforts to liberate Chios and Samos, the naval battle of Patras, the expedition Kasos, the naval battle of Gerontas, and the breaking of the blockade of Mesolonghi.
With arrival of Kapodistrias, Sachtouris assumed command of the flotilla off the coasts of Messinia. During the reign of King Otto, he was promoted to the rank of ice admiral, and was appointed Commander of the naval base of Poros.
