A Gearing FRAM I-type destroyer, Kanaris (D-212), was built in Texas in 1945, Greece bought her from the US navy in 1972. The destroyer was handed over in Norfolk, Virginia, USA, to her first Commanding Officer, Commander K. Zografos and a few months later she sailed into the naval base of Salamis.
The crest of Kanaris depicts a hand of a man that holds a torch. On the background, there is a turkish ship. The torch represents the flame of the Hellenic soul that destroyed the turkish plans in the Aegean Sea.
In 1993 Kanaris was decommissioned at the naval base of Salamis.
