From Monday, 08 September 2025, to Friday, 26 September 2025, the Submarine Search and Rescue Exercise (SMEREX 25) was conducted, organized by the Italian Navy. The exercise took place both in port and at sea, in the port and approaches of the Gulf of Taranto, with the participation of HS AIAS.
Onboard HS AIAS, subsystems of the central “SAVER” (Submarine Assistance, Ventilation Equipment and Rescue) system were successfully installed and tested. According to the exercise scenario, these subsystems provided the Italian Navy submarine ITS TODARO with the necessary air for her safe surfacing and the maintenance of habitability for her crew inside the vessel.
The participation of HS AIAS highlighted the readiness of the Hellenic Navy and our country’s commitment to assuming an active role in Submarine Search and Rescue matters. At the same time, the exercise served as a culmination of the Hellenic–Italian initiative and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on enhancing cooperation between the two Navies in the field of Submarine Search and Rescue.
