From Sunday, November 2 to Saturday, November 8, 2025, the exercise “NIRIIS 25” was conducted, including in-port activities at Souda Naval Base and the Maritime Interdiction Operations Training Center (MIOTC), as well as activities at sea in the wider maritime area of the island of Crete.
“NIRIIS” exercise is a multinational INVITEX (Invitation Exercise) which is organized annually by the Hellenic Navy, aiming to train participants in procedures related to both traditional forms of naval warfare and modern types of threats, focusing on maritime security issues.
On the Greek side, Hellenic Navy participated with Warships and assets from the Frigate, Fast Boat, Submarine, Amphibious Forces, Mine Warfare, Surveillance Vessel, Naval Aviation, and Underwater Demolition Commands. Additionally, assets and personnel from Hellenic Army, Hellenic Air Force, and Special Warfare Command took part, along with Warships from Israel and staff officers from Egypt, Bulgaria, and Israel.
During the underway phase of the Exercise, Greek and Israeli warships and assets conducted a series of operational scenarios, with emphasis on surface warfare, anti-air warfare, and complex advanced-maneuver drills. The Exercise highlighted the excellent level of cooperation and mutual understanding between the two navies, further enhancing interoperability, operational readiness, and the ability to conduct combined naval operations.
Exercise “NIRIIS 25” contributed significantly to enhancing operational effectiveness, coordination, and interoperability among all participants. It provided a valuable opportunity for the exchange of experience, the improvement of common procedures, and the enhancement of mutual trust, thus reinforcing collective maritime security and regional stability.
