History

HS AIOLOS (Special Operations Craft – Fast Transport) was built in 1998 in the USA on behalf of the United States Navy as “MK-V SOC (Special Operations Craft) 984”, with her primary mission being the transport of special warfare units (U.S. Navy SEALs) to operational theaters. The vessel remained in storage at a Special Operations Craft facility of the United States, specifically at the Naval Air Station North Island (within the facilities of the DLA – Defense Logistics Agency).

In November 2016, a Hellenic Navy delegation inspected decommissioned U.S. Navy vessels, positively evaluating a potential acquisition. In March 2018, the procurement of four vessels (MK-V SOC) was decided. In March 2020, these vessels were delivered to Salamis Naval Base, where maintenance and repair work began to prepare the ship for assignment to Fleet Headquarters.

The vessel was commissioned on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Salamis Naval Base, where she was assigned to Fleet Headquarters under the command of the Special Forces Command on Monday, November 2, 2020.
