HELLENIC NAVY HELICOPTER BASE (HNHB)
Emblem
The emblem of the 2nd Helicopter Squadron includesahawk, a brave and proud bird with characteristics of impetuosity and excellent vision. The Hawk is depicted facing east in a night environment, symbolizing the ability of the S-70 helicopter to operate at night. The excellent ability to see is symbolized by the reflection at the point of the eye with the shape of a cross. The three stars represent the three types of weapons carried by S70. The four white folds, form nine stripes corresponding to the nine stripes of the Greek flag. The emblem includes the oblique face of a PENGUIN guided missile and is completed with a band indicating the name of the squadron.
General
HNHB was established in 1986, when the headquarters of the Hellenic Naval Helicopter Command was transferred to Naval Fort Kotroni from Amfiali Naval Base located within the Naval Fortress of Skaramanga. HNHB is located northwest of Marathon (Kotroni Hill), in the prefecture of Attica, and is the Command Unit of the Kotroni Command Post (LGKN). LGKN is located at an altitude of 217 meters (713 feet) above sea level. It has 2 landing strips, one of which has 03/21 direction and 307 m (1,005 ft) long, while the other has 12/30 direction and 590 m (1,938 ft) long. Small aircraft can land on runway 12/30. Both runways are mainly used by helicopters. It also includes 16 parking spaces for its flying assets.
The mission of HNHB is to exercise the tactical control of HNAC at LGKN and its subordinate services, as well as to exercise air traffic control of the Kotroni airfield.
