History

The Class 520(L-178) transferring craft was built in Nowalzwerk, Hamburg, West Germany in 1966. It was originally a Class 520 landing craft of the LCT type. It was received by the Hellenic Navy and the Hellenic Flag was raised on 02-21-1990. The A/B NAXOS was built to transfer tanks, cars and materials on shores. Furthermore, it had the possibility to be used as a floating corridor, having a bow and stern catapult. On 11-21-2002, it was converted from A/B to a PMP (Personnel Transport Ship), with the purpose of carrying out personnel transport routes between N. Perama and Salamina Naval Station. It should be noted that it has not joined any war.
