HS AIOLOS (P-62)

The vessel is named after Aeolus, appointed by Zeus as the keeper of the winds, who held the winds within his bag and released them upon Zeus’s command. The name AIOLOS has previously been used by the Hellenic Navy for the German warship “PHEIL”, which upon her acquisition was renamed HS AIOLOS . She was a “FEROCITY”-type vessel of British construction with gas turbine propulsion. The ship served under the Hellenic Navy Fast Boat Command and was decommissioned on 10-07-1976.
Technical Characteristics
History
In November 2016, a Hellenic Navy delegation inspected decommissioned U.S. Navy vessels, positively evaluating a potential acquisition. In March 2018, the procurement of four vessels (MK-V SOC) was decided. In March 2020, these vessels were delivered to Salamis Naval Base, where maintenance and repair work began to prepare the ship for assignment to Fleet Headquarters.
The vessel was commissioned on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Salamis Naval Base, where she was assigned to Fleet Headquarters under the command of the Special Forces Command on Monday, November 2, 2020.
