She was named in honor of the heroically fallen Lieutenant Christodoulos Karathanasis HN during the Imia crisis,whose death occurred in the line of duty in the morning hours of January 31, 1996 as a result of the fall of the E/P AB 212 HN-21 of which he was the Captain.
