Rear Admiral Ioannis Sarakis HN was born in Athens, Greece in 1968. He graduated from the Hellenic Naval Academy in 1991 as ensign. 

He has served as Commanding Officer of PGFG  ( FAC/M) HS SAKIPIS and FFGH HS AEGEAN, and as executive officer of FFGH HS SPETSAI. His staff assignments include duties as Director of Intelligence – Security and Foreign Relations Directorates at HNGS, Head of Hellenic Fleet Operational Training and Evaluation Directorate, Director of Operation Directorate ( A΄ Branch ) of Hellenic Navy Fleet. He has also served as a Commander of Frigates Squadron One (COMHELFRIGRON ONE).

In January 2026, he was promoted to Rear Admiral and was assigned the duties of Deputy Commander in Chief of the Hellenic Fleet.  

His military education and training include the Hellenic Navy Gunnery Officers School, the Hellenic Navy War College, the Hellenic Supreme Joint War College, Naval Staff College of USA and the Hellenic National Defense College.

He holds all the designated medals and commendations for his rank.

He is married and has one child.

He speaks English fluently.
