History

Commissioned in Hellenic Navy: 24/10/2003 Previously commissioned in other Navies: 2/12/1981 – 24/10/2003 Koninkljke Marine. In recognition of the great Athenian politician, General and Admiral, Themistocles, (525-461 B.C.) and his bravery during the victorious naval battle of Salamis (480 B.C.) against the Persians, Hellenic Navy ever since 1821 named five ships after him. The first two were modified merchant ships that participated in he Independence War against the Ottoman Empire. The third ship was an Escort Destroyer (D-09), Which was transferred from the Royal Navy, the fourth was an American Destroyer of the GEARING FRAM II Class (D-210) and the last one was an American Destroyer of the C.F.ADAMS Class (D-221). Since her commission in the Hellenic Navy, HS THEMISTOKLES has participated in plenty of national and international operations and exercises contributing in our country’s national defense. Some of these operations and exercises are: Operation SNMG2 (14/1/2005 – 25/7/2005), Operation KEDROS (16/7/2006 – 3/8/2006), Operation  UNIFIL MAROPS (18/12/2007 – 24/3/2008), Operation SNMG2 (28/8/2008 – 16/12/2008), Exercise NOBLE MIDAS (26-29/9/2008), Operation ALLIED PROVIDER (23/10/2008 – 12/12/2008), Operation SNMG2 (17/8/2010 – 21/11/2010), Exercise JOINT WARRIOR (4-14/10/2010), Exercise MAVI BALINA 2010 (3-11/11/2010), Operation ΑRISTEOS (14-28/3/2011) Surveillance of the SW Cretan Sea Operation (13-30/5/2011), Operation EUNAVFORMED IRINI (24/7/2021 – 30/9/2021), Operation EUNAVFORMED IRINI (8/4/2022 – 2/8/2022).
