History
The ship is the fourth out of seven FPB ROUSSEN class warships built at the Elefsina Shipyards based on the proposal of the English company VOSPER THORNYCROFT Ltd. HS GRIGOROPOULOS was launched on December 21, 2005 and joined the Navy on October 1, 2010. She received this name in honour of Lieutenant Michael Grigoropoulos HN, Executive Officer of HS Queen Olga,who was killed on September 26, 1943, during the air attack of the German Air Force on the Lakki bay of Leros Island, which resulted in the sinking of this ship. She is the second ship of the fleet that has the same name.The first was a vehicle-carrier with identity number L-161.This was the former USS LSM-45, which was one of six of the same type granted to Greece in 1958 by the US as part of military aid. The Fast Patrol Boat Lieutenant GRIGOROPOULOS, is a state of the art warship,designed to conduct Naval Operations near shores, with excellent capabilities to confront air, surface ships and missile targets. Her main characteristics are the quick response to threats, the great firepower, the high speed of operations, the increased capabilities of confronting damages during the battle and undertaking operations in a Biological – Nuclear –Chemical and Electronic Warfare environment. HS GRIGOROPOULOS belongs to the Fast Attack Craft Command of Hellenic Fleet Command and the missions that may be assigned to her are the following:
- Participation in maritime control operations
- Participation in air defense operations
- Carrying out naval bombardment
- Participation in maritime interdiction operations (MIO)
- Amphibious unit support
- Participation in search and rescue (SAR) operations
- Participation in search and rescue (SAR) operations
- Confrontation of asymmetric threats
- Assistance to the Hellenic Port Authorities in operations to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants.
