HELLENIC
The Dutch-built Frigate Elli (F-450) is the first Standard-type frigate of the Hellenic Fleet. The contract for the building of the ship was signed in Athens in 1980 and a year later she sailed into the Naval Base of Salamis. The name Elli was given to the first frigate of the Hellenic Navy in memory of the torpedoed cruiser Elli by Italian submarine, on August 15, 1940, in the port of Tinos, where it had been sent for the religious celebrations for the Virgin Mary. That cruiser had been named in memory of the victorious naval battle of the Hellenic Fleet against the Ottomans in the vicinity of cape Elli.
