The Νaval Βattle of Patras took place on February 20, 1822, it was the first large scale naval battle of the Hellenic War of Independence. The Ottoman fleet consisted of 70 ships under the orders of Pepe Ali Admiral sailed away toward the fortress of Patras in order to being reinforcement. On approaching Patras, the Ottoman fleet was attached by the Hellenic fleet, which consisted of 63 ships from the islands of Psara, Hydra and Spetses under the orders of Nikolis Apostolis, Andreas Miaoulis and Gikas Tsupas. The naval battle took place during a storm and lasted almost six hours, due to skillful maneuvering of the Greeks, the Ottoman fleet was forced to seek refuge at the island of Zakynthos, which was at that time under British rule.
