Naming and Induction Ceremony in the Hellenic Navy of the Guided Missile Fast Patrol Boat (FPB) “Lieutenant KARATHANASIS”

On Tuesday, July 28th, 2020, the ceremony of naming and induction of the newly built Guided Missile Fast Patrol Boat (FPB) “Lieutenant KARATHANASIS” in the Hellenic Navy, was held in Skaramagkas Naval Fort.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of National Defence Mr Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr Alkiviadis Stefanis, the Chief of HNDGS General Konstantinos Floros, the Chief of HNGS Vice Admiral Stylianos Petrakis ΗΝ, the Chiefs of General Staff of the Armed Forces (AF) and Security Forces (SF) or their representatives, members of the Government and Parliament, members of the Local and Religious Authorities, members of the Supreme Naval Council, representatives of the Elefsina Shipyards, and other guests.

The FPB “Lieutenant KARATHANASIS” was named in honor of Lieutenant Christodoulos Karathanasis HN, Pilot of the Helicopter HN-21 who fell in the line of duty in January 1996 along with Lieutenant Panagiotis Vlachakos and Master Chief Petty Officer Ektoras Yalopsos during the Imia crisis.

The ship’s godfather was the son of the heroically fallen Officer, Ioannis Karathanasis.

The ceremony was also attended by graduates of the 1985 Class of the Naval Academy, classmates of the late Lieutenant Ch. Karathanasis HN, as well as members of his family.
