Training Center Palaskas
Crest
A cluster of a sword, an anchor and a cannon. The anchor and the cannon symbolize the first two schools which were founded at the Training Center, that is the “School of Navigation” and the “School of Gunnery”. The sword symbolizes the fighting spirit that all the Schools of the center instill in their trainees.
History
Following the liberation of Greece in 1945, the Hellenic Navy proceeded to organize the training of its low-ranking personnel, in parallel with the organization of its services, and it was decided that the main schools of the Navy should be located in the region of Skaramangas, where the Gunnery School and the Senior Command of Schools used to be in the pre-war years. So, in 1948 the Training Center PALASKAS was founded in the region of Skaramangas, in accordance with the decree issued by the Ministry for Naval Affairs and the Naval Training Headquarters, simultaneously with the Training Center KANELLOPOULOS and the Training Center POROS. The first schools which were founded were the Schools of Navigation, the School of Gunnery, the School for Radar operators and the Navy Band School.
As years went by, both the composition and the number of schools at the Training Center PALASKAS were modified many times. After the destructive earthquake on 7 September 1999, the Training Centers KANELLOPOULOS and SAKIPIS were officially abolished, and their schools were under the command of the newly reformed Training Center PALASKAS. In this context, the wider region (Naval Training Command – Training Center PALASKAS – Training Center KANELLOPOULOS) was renamed KANELLOPOULOS Camp, a procedure which was completed in May 2001 and brought about the unification of the three Training Centers into the newly reformed Training Center PALASKAS. In June 2008, an official distinction was drawn between the Training Center PALASKAS and the Training Center KANELLOPOULOS in accordance with the decree, still in effect, issued by the Hellenic Navy General Staff, which describes the establishment of the Naval Base KANELLOPOULOS and the modification of the organizational structure of the Training Center PALASKAS.
