On Tuesday, 20 January 2026, the Deputy Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral Spyridon Lagaras HN, and Rear Admiral (Upper Half) Fabio Gregori (Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy) signed in Rome the Operational Memorandum of Cooperation establishing the NATO Underwater Centre of Excellence, in which Greece participates as a full member.
The Centre, which will be headquartered in La Spezia, Italy, was established with the aim of creating an ecosystem of all relevant stakeholders for the development of technological and doctrinal solutions to address emerging threats in the underwater domain.
