HS NAXOS L-178

Crest

The crest depicts an Athenian trireme on the top left section of it and a cluster of a propeller, an anchor and a missile on the lower right section. The trireme is historically linked with the Battle of Salamis, not only because the Greek fleet consisted of ships of the specific type, but also because it took place in the sea region close to the Naval Base. The propeller, the anchor and the missile denote the contribution of the Naval Base to the seaworthiness and combat effectiveness of the Hellenic Warship.

History

The Class 520(L-178) transferring craft was built in Nowalzwerk, Hamburg, West Germany in 1966. It was originally a Class 520 landing craft of the LCT type. It was received by the Hellenic Navy and the Hellenic Flag was raised on 02-21-1990. The A/B NAXOS was built to transfer tanks, cars and materials on shores. Furthermore, it had the possibility to be used as a floating corridor, having a bow and stern catapult. On 11-21-2002, it was converted from A/B to a PMP (Personnel Transport Ship), with the purpose of carrying out personnel transport routes between N. Perama and Salamina Naval Station. It should be noted that it has not joined any war.
