Hellenic Navy Band
History
The Hellenic Navy Band began its operation in April 1879, a fact confirmed by newspaper reports that a band was formed on the warship ‘’HELLAS’’ consisting of 35 musicians.
In October 1879, the newly built cruiser ‘’ADMIRAL MIAOULIS’’ arrived in Greece, resulting in the coexistence of two music departments on warships.
It is worth mentioning the first trip of Band abroad that took place in Malta, in November 1879. There, the Band on the ship ‘’HELLAS’’ held a concert in the central square of Valletta, receiving very positive comments.
An important milestone in its history constituted its participation in the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896.
During the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, the Band followed the fleet aboard the Battleship ‘’PSARA’’.
In 1911, the Band settled in the Armored Cruiser “GEORGIOS AVEROF”, upon its acquisition. Since then, the history of the Band has been inextricably linked to the glorious history of ‘’AVEROF’’ for a long time. During the Balkan wars (1912-1913) and the operations of the period 1919-1922, the Hellenic Navy Band aboard “AVEROF” followed the Fleet and with its presence encouraged and entertained the crews and the populations of the areas where the Fleet was active.
In 1926, the Hellenic Navy Band, the first of all the Greek military Bands, presented in its official performances a Drum Major of European standards, who directed and gave orders under the instructions of the Conductor. That same year, the band once again pioneered by presenting precision formations, following the standards of European Military Musicians. Its innovations continued in 1934, with the acquisition of a goat as a “mascot”, which followed the Band in its performances “dressed” in a naval uniform.
In April 1941, after the collapse of the Front, the Music of “AVEROF” followed the emigration of the Fleet to the Middle East, participating in the adventurous escape of the legendary “AVEROF”.
Among other things, its participation in the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004, as well as in the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics held at the Panathenaic Stadium in 2011, was notable. So far the HN Band has performed in many parts of Greece as well as in the United States of America, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Korea, Sweden, Belgium, Poland, Malta, Egypt, Russia, Bulgaria and Montenegro. The Band also participated in television shows and cinema movies.
Mission
The Hellenic Navy Band fulfills the requirements for participation in official ceremonies (e.g. honoring entitled persons or symbols) and/or in ceremonial, cultural and entertainment events, both domestic and abroad.
