Naval Facilities of Leros
Crest
The crest of the Service depicts in the upper part the symbols of the Shipbuilding Services which are the propeller (symbol of the Engineers), the triangle with a compass (symbol of the Technical Specialties) and the anchor. At the bottom of the Thyreos is depicted the island of Leros and a compass.
History
The Naval Facilities of the island of Leros were built during the Italian occupation, namely from 1926 to 1939. The area of Ag. Georgiou was chosen for the creation of a Naval Base that would include facilities for the maintenance and repair of surface ships and submarines, warehouses for spare parts, food, gunpowder stores, fuel tanks and ship crew quarters.
After the liberation of the Dodecanese all the old Italian Naval installations of the island were handed over to the Greek State (Ministry of Finance) as part of the war reparations and in January 1953 they were handed over to P.N. Then a Naval Station was created which, under the supervision of the Coast Guard, was maintained until 1957, when it was abolished and two separate services were created, the Maritime Supervision of Leros (NEL) as an operational body and the Marine Technical Facilities Service of Leros (YNTEL) at the facilities of Ag. Georgiou, as a logistics organization subordinated through NDA and NS to GEN and DDMN respectively with Commanding Officers of the Coast Guard.
YNTEL’s original facilities did not include the Command Hall, all workshops and warehouses which belonged to the Royal Technical Schools until their closure in 1964.
It should be noted that the old Italian Naval installations were delivered destroyed by the bombings that took place in the Battle of Leros in the fall of 1943, a fact that is also reflected in the relevant receipt protocols and for the activation of part of them mainly in the area of St. Georgiou where YNTEL’s facilities are located, the recruitment of Civil Servants of various technical specialties was required.
From 24-8-83, the Administration of YNTEL was taken over by the Navy with a Senior Engineer Officer PN in command, at which point the gradual utilization and development of the necessary facilities began with the aim of creating an advanced base, with the possibility of providing similar DM facilities to the ships that supervise the sea area of the Eastern Aegean.
In the 5 years 1955-60, the NATO Fuel Facilities and Ammunition Warehouses were built in Partheni Leros.
